The two-time defending playoff champion and 2010 pennant winning Brantford Red Sox became the first team to advance to the second round of the playoffs with a 5-3 win over the Hamilton Thunderbirds in one of two games played in the Intercounty Baseball League Friday night.
Brantford sweeps the best-of-seven opening round series in four straight games and will play the lowest seeded team remaining in the second round of the playoffs starting next week.
Starter Marc-Andre Major picked up the win for the Red Sox, going 6 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and three walks before two relievers finished up. Brian Speck got the last five outs to record the save.
The Red Sox slapped out 12 hits, with Hyung Cho leading the way with three hits. Bryon Bell had two hits and an RBI and Tyler Burnell also had two hits for the Sox. Josh McCurdy scored twice, had an RBI and added a hit for the winners.
Hamilton starter Jordell Farquharson was the loser. He allowed four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.
Chris Piano had three hits, including a two-run homer, while Jordan Windisch had two hits and scored a run for Hamilton.
